Indian Market in Otavalo
The boarder crossing in Ipiales was “muy tranquillo” – the easiest and fastest so far. We passed Ibarra and headed straight to Otavalo. It was Saturday and we wanted to check out the famous Indigenous Crafts Market. A fascinating way to experience traditional Ecuadorian culture and the traditions of the Andes. Amazing – what a colourful spectacle. Here are some impressions:
Otavalo & Laguna Mojanda
Otavalo’s beauty lies in its people and surroundings, the Otavaleños and the towering volcanoes that surround the andean town. We found the hostel La Luna (also on ioverlander.com) a little outside of town towards the Laguna Mojanda. From there are many options for hiking.
Watch this movie about Ecuadorian music:
Cotacachi Cayapas Ecological Reserve & Zona de Intag
One of the most popular places to visit in the reserve is the impressive Laguna Cuicocha, a stunning crater lake situated at the foot of the Cotacachi Volcano, at an altitude of 3200 meters (10,500 ft)
crossing the equator. May the journey begin on the Southern Hemisphere!
